Elevator music was a type of background music typically played in public spaces like elevators, lobbies and shopping malls.

Historically, as skyscrapers rose in the early 20th century, these soothing sounds were introduced in elevators to calm uneasy passengers. Characterized by its soft and unobtrusive nature, the music was designed to fill the silence without demanding full attention, creating a welcoming ambiance for people in transit. Today, background music has gradually evolved into mindless noise — a relentless stream of generic hitlists and soulless commercial radio that completely ignores the atmosphere and character of a space.
